When they first got to the house, Lili had led Max up to the bedrooms.
“I’m going to put you in Blake’s room, if that’s alright with you, Max? Blakely, you’re going to sleep with your sister.” Max spotted a door down the hall with a giant handwritten “Keep Out” sign.
“Great.” Blakely cringed. Halle was a total tattletale; her mom probably stuck them together on purpose so she couldn’t sneak over to see Max in the middle of the night.
“Hope you don’t mind pink.” Blakely grimaced as they approached her door. “It was kind of my signature color when we last decorated.”
“You could say that,” Max laughed as they stepped inside. “I don’t think I’ve ever slept in a bed that color before.”
“It was this or the couch,” Mrs. Henry said. “And I thought you might be a little too big for the couch.”
The walls were three different shades of pink with lavender stripes, and it took her all of her twelfth summer to find a Jolly Rancher watermelon-pink bed frame. This was embarrassing, Blakely thought, taking in her cotton candy duvet.
“The room’s great, Mrs. Henry,” Max assured her.
“Lili,” she reminded him.
After a delicious spaghetti dinner, they all settled in to watch a movie.
“Mom, can I take Max into town?” Blakely asked, losing patience with the old Clint Eastwood film her dad insisted they watch.
“But this is a classic! How can you leave at a time like this?” Graham joked from the well-worn sofa.
“Please? It’s the night before Thanksgiving. I want to show him around.”
“Can I come, Blakely?” Halle begged, giving her sister her best puppy-dog eyes. “Please, please, please?”
Lili gave in on her own terms. “If you take your sister, I don’t see why not.”
“Sure.” How was she supposed to resist Halle’s big brown eyes when she looked up at her like that? The kid had completely worked the system. “Where are the car keys?”
“On the counter next to my purse. Take a twenty if you want ice cream.”
Blakely grabbed Max’s hand and snatched the keys from the counter. “Follow me,” she nudged, pushing him into the shadowy garage. Her dad’s big black Suburban sat in the bay next to her mom’s sportier gold Volkswagen. Blakely pressed Max back into the wall. “OK, I’ve been dying to do this ever since we got home.”
“Ew, get a room!” Halle yelled, flipping on the garage lights.
“God, you little brat! Couldn’t you take a little longer to get ready?”
“Not when we’re going for ice cream!”
